What is Unsighted Coaching?
Unsighted Coaching is a way to help businesses boost efficiency by improving communication. It’s best employed across a whole company or team – I’ll work with the group to identify interactions where communication can be improved. We’ll then record these interactions and use video and audio clips to stimulate self-reflection.
It’s this use of recordings that sets Unsighted Coaching apart from other business coaching strategies. It’s surprising how much of a difference there can be between our recollection of an event and a recording, so this method brings many ‘unsighted’ issues into view.
These issues can be problems to solve or strengths to cultivate. I’ll work with you to develop insights from the recordings, and I’ll help you identify and make changes to improve communication across the team.
In this way, Unsighted Coaching helps colleagues to work more effectively together, and also helps managers to guide their teams without being present the whole time. This is particularly relevant these days given the rise in remote working – many managers are now ‘unsighted’ from the action. While a lot of the management advice out there hinges on people’s presence in the workplace, Unsighted Coaching helps make remote working a sustainable part of the business model.
So there’s a double reason behind the name ‘unsighted’ – firstly the coaching reveals unseen issues, and secondly it helps managers work effectively even when removed from the action.
How does Unsighted Coaching boost operational performance?
Unsighted Coaching helps address areas where communication gaps are stopping processes running smoothly. Delays and inefficiency can add up to a huge monetary cost, so this business coaching service helps companies make significant savings in the long term.
By improving communication, Unsighted Coaching can also facilitate quicker resolution of customer issues and support stronger customer services.
Unsighted Coaching is also a tool for personal development. By using this methodology, you will be investing in those people most critical to your business strategy.
The Process and the Programme
1. Identify Focus Areas
Identify areas where communication gaps are costing the organisation – where could Unsighted Coaching deliver a 10-fold return on investment? Then identify the people involved and select interactions it would be valuable to record and learn from.
2. Plan and Prepare
Take time to prepare for the event you will record. Reflecting prior to action is a great habit to get into!
3. Perform and Record
Record the event, but don’t watch your recording immediately.
4. Reflect on Memory
For the first 48 hours, reflect on memory alone. Then listen to or watch your recording, and compare your reflections – where did your memory differ from reality?
5. Coaching Support
I will work with you to develop insights – expect me to facilitate rather than direct, encouraging deep reflection and guiding you to discover new ways of communicating.
We’ll repeat the recording and reflecting process one month later, and you can look for improvements and assess what to work on further. In total, the process will be repeated six times throughout the learning programme.
How do you know if Unsighted Coaching is right for your business?
Unsighted Coaching is especially relevant in the current climate, as remote working exacerbates the communications challenges faced by any business. However, that being said, it isn’t the right answer for every situation. Unsighted Coaching will provide most benefit to businesses that are keen to take a blended approach to remote and office-based working as the future unfolds.
Most importantly, Unsighted Coaching is best for businesses that are driven to continually improve performance and are focused on the personal development of their employees. It takes some commitment to really engage with the coaching process and maximise the benefits by incorporating findings into appraisals and one-to-ones. If companies are able to devote the time to Unsighted Coaching, it can deliver a remarkable return on investment.
The best way to figure out if this business coaching service would help you is to contact me and talk through your situation. In this conversation we can identify your business need and work out if Unsighted Coaching is the best solution for you. We’ll do this by estimating the cost saving you could achieve, and working out how much time you’d be able to invest in the process. Get in touch to book a free chat today.
